What is Data Communication?

One of the key aspects of data communication is knowing your audience and creating visualizations that communicate information in a convincing manner. Effective data communication include using the right words to deliver the information.

The basic definition of data communication is the transfer of information from one computer to another over networks or other media. Information could range from a simple audio file to a text message. The medium used to transmit data could be wired or wireless. For two computers to be capable of communicating they require a method to connect. This is known as a channel or network.

There are several types of data transmission channels used in modern networks for data communication. They include duplex, simplex and full-duplex. Simplex mode allows information to flow only in one direction, whereas duplex mode allows the transmitter and receiver to both transmit simultaneously. Full-duplex is similar to duplex however it requires that both transmitter and the receiver be synchronized to read the binary data bits of the transmitted signal.

The information that is transmitted via a data communication channel can be either digital messages transmitted by a microprocessor, or an analog signal (such as a video or telephone call) that is digitalized with pulse-code modulation. Any errors in the transmission data should be identified and corrected to ensure that only correct information is received by the receiver at the other end. This is usually accomplished by the use of sequence numbers and acknowledgement codes.
